KSUNGU – Fear gripped Kasungu Municipality residents on Tuesday following rumours on social media that a Chinese national who was reported to have landed in the country from China on Sunday has got Coronavirus (Covid-19).

The rumours indicated that the suspected man was being spotted in a Chinese owned supermarket in the district instead of being in self-isolation.

However the owner of 365 Super Market, Leng PengHuan who is said to have been visited by the suspect, denied the allegations saying the one who appeared in the shop was a Chinese neighbour to the suspect.

Health Promotion Officer and Spokesperson for Kasungu District Health Office (DHO), Catherine Yoweri identified the suspect as Zhian Chen.

She said there was no need to panic as Chen had been quarantined.

Yoweri said a medical team from Kasungu District hospital was deployed and clearly established that the man had no signs and symptoms of the virus.

“We have traced this Chinese national and a medical team visited him. He is on fifth day out of the official 14 days of self-quarantine.

He has never got in any physical contact with any person and he is under our 24 hour continuous surveillance until he satisfies the 14 days official period of self-isolation,” she pointed out.

Yoweri said that everything was under control and there was no need for people to panic. She assured people that Chen came through Kamuzu international Airport and went through all the official screening processes for COVID-19 and not through unofficial port of entry as rumors stated earlier.
