Peter Mutharika, younger brother to Malawi’s late president Bingu wa Mutharika, has summoned his brother’s widow Callista and her step children to a round table discussions over growing tension between the two sides.
Mutharika’s personal assistant Ben Phiri confirmed the development in an interview on Friday.
“The Professor is aware of the differences, and he has summoned the concerned parties to find a way out, he talked to them as an uncle, in-law and head of the family, but the discussions could not be concluded on the phone,” Phiri said.
He could not indicate when the discussions would take place saying the Professor is currently outside Blantyre. Southern Region Police publicist Nicholas Gondwa said on Friday that there were some differences at Ndata Farm between Callista and her step daughters.
“The former first lady went to Mikolongwe Police to report that her step daughters wanted to hold a party at Ndata Palace yet she was still mourning her husband.
“The police did not follow up. When the children insisted to hold the party in the house on Thursday, Callista went to Mikolongwe again to report,” Gondwa said.
According to Gondwa, when the police assessed the situation at Ndata, they discovered that it was a family issue and left the place.
“We just advised them to seek the intervention of Professor Peter Mutharika because it is a family matter,” he explained.
One of the Mutharika’s marriage counsellors Charles Matabwa refused to comment saying, “the person I was representing died, therefore don’t involve me in that issue”.
