A Rwandan man who breached government’s instruction to stay at home during the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown to go fishing, has been killed and eaten by a crocodile, the New York Post reported.

Alice Kayitesi, the mayor of the southern Kamonyi district, confirmed the incident, which took place in the Nyabarongo river on Wednesday.

The victim’s name and age have not been made public yet.

“He had broken the stay-home rule, he’s among very few people here who are not cooperating with the lockdown to stop the virus,” Kayitesi told BBC news.

Rwanda’s government had urged citizens to stay at home from Sunday in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The country has recorded about 41 infections so far.

The East African nation has the highest number of cases in the region, even though no deaths have been recorded.

The country has declared unnecessary movement outside homes during the global pandemic illegal, except for essential services.

A number of African countries have also initiated 21-national lockdowns to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus.  South Africa started a nationwide military-patrolled lockdown on Friday, joining other African countries which have imposed strict curfews and shutdowns in an attempt to halt the spread of the coronavirus.

Some 57 million people are restricted to their homes during the three-week total lockdown.  Neighbours Zimbabwe, also started their own three-week national lockdown on Monday (today).

The coronavirus has claimed over 33, 997 lives from 723,389 cases globally. The deadly virus is now affecting 199 countries and territories around the world and 2 international conveyances: the Diamond Princess cruise ship harboured in Yokohama, Japan, and the Holland America’s MS Zaandam cruise ship.

However, out of the 185,806 closed cases, 151, 809 people have recovered from the coronavirus which translates to an 82 per cent recovery rate. There are still 537,583 active cases.
