A 20-year-old motorcyclist has died in Dowa following a collision with a car coming from opposite direction on Sunday.The deceased has been identified as Frank Leputala from Lavu Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District, confiremed Sub Inspector Gladson M’bumpha, Dowa Police Public Relations Officer (PRO)

According to M’bumpha, the accident happened at Chiponda Village along Salima-Lilongweroad when a motor vehicle Hino Ranger registration number DA7094, driven by Kadaona Bole crashed into unregistered motorcycle riden by the deceased man.

“The motorcyclist was heading towards Salima from Lilongwe direction with a pillion passenger Kondwani Gevinala aged 20 from Lavu Village, Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa. Upon arrival at Chiponda village, the rider hit the motor vehicle which was coming from Salima direction going towards Lilongwe with load of firewood on board.

This happened because the driver inconsideratelymade a u-turn to face Salima direction where he was coming from.” Explained M’bumphaHe indicated that following the impact, the rider suffered severe head injury while the pillion passenger is unconscious.”Death of the rider was confirmed at Chankhungu Health Centre while the pillion passenger was referred to Dowa District Hospital and the driver of the motor vehicle fled the scene.The motorcycle got its front part extensively damaged while the motor vehicle got its fuel tank deformed.” He explained

He has since indicated that police have launched a manhunt for the driver of the motor vehicle and if arrested, he will answer a charge of causing death by reckless driving.
