Our grandmas, bless their souls, always knew what to give us when we had the sniffles and coughs.
A lot of it wasn’t bought from the pharmacy but whipped up in their kitchen using their ‘secret’ ingredients.
We would be feeling better after taking some and the ailment forgotten.
My grandmother is famous for boiling lemon (together with the rinds), water and a bit of cooking oil. Lord knows it doesn’t taste so good, but it seemed to work like a charm when we had the coughs as home.
I’m not even sure about the science behind it but it got the job done.
So you got the mild, irritating cough at home during this lockdown and you want something soothing that will at least halt the coughing process or decrease the frequency.
You also want something that will decongest those airways so you can’t breathe better.
You need these simple, affordable ingredients which you might already have in your kitchen.
For the cough mixture, ground ginger, ground cayenne pepper , apple cider vinegar and honey are the ingredients you need to use.
You simply need to mix the apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper, honey and water in a small jar and shake vigorously to combine all the ingredients.
Wait for a few hours for the ingredients flavors to fuse in order to get a more potent mixture out of it.
You can store it, in or outside the fridge.
Remember to shake well each time before use as the spices do not dissolve in the liquid.
One to two teaspoons 3 times a day is enough for the little ones while adults need a whole tablespoonful.
