Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has suspended voter registration exercise in Blantyre with immediate effect
MEC chairperson Jane Ansah made the announcement in a statement seen by face of Malawi of reporter, dated Apri 14.
According to Ansah, cases of attacks on MEC’s registration staff and property is the reason.
Justice Ansah said a group of unknown people attacked some registration centers’ staff and damaged some property while accusing the commission of continuing with the voter registration exercise despite the coronavirus threat.
She has also informed the nation that an application to vary the exercise has already been filed at the Supreme Court and are now awaiting a determination which will be communicated to the nation.
Earlier in the day, police arrested one suspect but has been released on police bail.
