Students at Mangochi Community Technical College have come up with an improved version of a hand washing facility in a work to fight the deadly corona virus.
The movable facility has an electric hand drier and a drainage system which discern it with other common hand washing facilities people are using.
Principal for the College, Mbasa Mwambene, describe the facility as convenient, saying apart from the issue at hand of Covid 19, there are other sanitation and hygiene benefits.
“This thing has got two main elements that have been added, a drainage system and a hand drier because we have seen other facilities that people are using and we thought as a technical team we can add value,” said Mwambene.
He said they have added a plumbing element because with other hand wash facilities, after washing the used water remains in a container which compromise sanitation again and the drier which can take a maximum 30 seconds to dry hands with a maximum heat of 40 degrees, is to completely kill the germs.
“You know after washing hands with soap, you may need to dry your hands and some use a cloth which might not be safe as it can also carry the virus,” said Mwambene.
He said the drier has been designed in a way that can be powered by solar so that even in the areas where they are not connected to electricity or in circumstances that power is disconnected, the facility can still work.
According to the principal, the facility is a combination of efforts from the plumbing and the electrical installation and electronic classes.
