Ministry of Transport and Public works has said it will spend almost K450 million on a road grading programme throughout the country.
Minister of Transport and Public works, Sidik Mia said this on Sunday in Lilongwe during the launch of this year’s National Road Grading Programme.
He said the grading of the roads will ease transport problems that rock production areas in the country.
He said feeder roads play a very important role because they make markets easily accessible.
“The grading programme which is targeting feeder roads, assist in the achievement of goals in the Economic Recovery plan,” he said.
The minister said the roads under the grading programme are those that need urgent attention and also play a very important role in the social economic welfare of the local people.
MP for Lilongwe K u m a c h e n g a constituency, Moreen Bondo commenting on the road grading programme said it will not be not only be farmers who will benefit but will also make it easy for people to access hospital services during rainy season.
Government launched the Malawi Economic Recovery Plan and one of the focus areas in the plan is the improvement of feeder roads, focusing particularly on the roads that support growth of some selected crops.
This year’s road grading programme is covering all districts and 2500 Kilometres will be graded
