Nkhotakota Police on Tuesday night arrested a driver and two bus conductors for a UDK Bus at Kaombe Roadblock in the district for allegedly smuggling Indian hemp.

The district’s Police Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Williams Kaponda confirmed the arrests which took place at Kaombe Road block after a tip-off.

He identified the driver as Penjani Umali, 31, from Namilongo Village in Traditional Authority (T.A.) Mlumbe in Zomba. The conductors are Lysani Saiti, 31, from Witika Village in T.A. Tchema in Chiladzulu and Madalitso Saulosi, 30, from Chinamwali Village in T.A. Kuntumanji in Zomba.

Kaponda said the bus, registration number BQ 629, was driving to Blantyre from Dwangwa.

However, between Dwangwa and Nkhotakota Boma the bus stopped and a whistle blower saw the three accused packing suspicious goods in the bus before alerting the police.

“The bus was stopped at Kaombe Roadblock near Nkhotakota boma and after searching, it was confirmed that the goods were Indian hemp concealed in one sack bag and three plastic bags hidden close to the battery space,” said Kaponda.

The three are expected to appear in court soon to answer the charge of being found in possession of cannabis sativa without a license.
