A 64-year-old man is feared dead in Nsanje after allegedly drowning in Shire River, police have confirmed.
Nsanje Police Publicist, Sub Inspector Agnes Zalakoma identified the man as Richard Sukweya of Nkango Village in the area of Traditional Authority Tengani in the district.
Zalakoma said on May 9, 2020 Sukweya went fishing in the river where the boat capsized.
“On May 9, 2020, at about 5 am, Sukweya and his brother in marriage, Androff Bikolo went fishing in the Shire River. After working for the whole day, the two decided to go back home but as they were crossing the river, a canoe they were using suddenly capsized.
“The two tried to swim, aiming at rescuing themselves but Richard Sukweya drowned in the process,” explained Zalakoma.
She further said after the incident, Bikolo rushed to the police to report the incident and the police visited the scene.
According to Zalakoma, the police have instituted an enquiry to trace the whereabouts of the victim.
