Tanzania head of state John Pombe Magufuli has given the green light for sporting activities to resume in the country from June 1.
The head of state, whose mode of combating the coronavirus in Tanzanian came into scrunity in recent weeks, noted there cases were slowly going down, hence the need to slowly reopen the economy.
One of the sectors Magufuli has been keen on re opening was sports, which he says can be back in only a matter of days.
Speaking in a presser on Thursday, May 21, Magufuli made the announcement, adding that there were no sportsmen who were reported to have the virus.
“Looking at the trend, I don’t think there is any sportsman who has died from coronavirus. I believe sports helps in fighting the virus, and there are many kinds of sports in this country,” Magufuli stated.
“Sports is something I believe helps in the fight. Therefore I have decided from June 1, sports should kick off once again.”
The Tanzanian Football Federation (TFF), like many other counterparts, suspended sporting activities in March 2020 in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic after the government banned public gatherings.
