Newly appointed Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Justice Chifundo Kachale has been officially sworn in Blantyre at High Court.
Kachale’s appointment follows Jane Ansah’s resignation as the electoral body’s chairperson.
President Peter Mutharika on Sunday announced a set of new commission following the end of contract of other commissioners.
Arthur Nanthuru, Olivia Liwewe, Linda Kunje, Steve Duwa, Dr. Jean Mathanga, and Dr. Anthony Mukumbwa are making the new set of the electoral body.
Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda has implored on them to always remember that their ultimate responsibility is to safeguard political will of the electorates and not specific individuals.
Meanwhile, parliament has set June 23 as the day Malawians will go to vote for fresh presidential elections sanctioned by the Constitutional Court following the nullification of May 21, 2019 presidential elections.
