The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has declared Tonse Alliance torchbearer Dr. Lazarus Chakwera who is also Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President as winner of the fresh Presidential polls.

MEC Chairperson Dr. Chifundo Kachale made the declaration on Saturday at night College of Medicine in the commercial capital Blantyre.

Chakwera outclassed the incumbent President Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance with 2.5 million votes against 1.7 million votes.

The votes amassed by Chakwera represents 59.4 percent and Mutharika has amassed 39 percent.

The development means Chakwera is the 6th President of the republic of Malawi.

Earlier in the day Mutharika and his runningmate held a media briefing at Sanjika Palace in the commercial capital Blantyre where they described the polls as the worst ever.

However, Mutharika urged his supports to keep calm and respect the office of the Presidency.
