Malawi’s Former Head of state Peter Mutharika has hit back at politicians who politicized the deadly coronavirus during the time he was the president.

Mutharika, writing on his Facebook page said his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration tried and urged people in the country to join him in fighting against the deadly virus seriously.

The 80 year old ex-president worried that it was very unfortunate that a time that the country would have fought the pandemic, some Malawians politicized the efforts to the “extent of saying Corona Virus never existed in the country”

He continued that it is frightening that the numbers of confirmed cases continue to rise and the death toll is sky-rocketing each passing day.

This follows what former president Joyce Banda said during a political rally in Nkhata Bay that there is no coronavirus in the country alleging that Mutharika’s administration had personal gains out of the virus.

Mutharika therefore urged people in the country to continue following preventive measures put in place by the government through the ministry of health as a way of halting the spread of the deadly virus.

“As we wait for the Government to address the situation with utmost urgency and seriousness, I want to urge you to continue washing hands with soap frequently, observe social distancing, wear face masks, use recommended sanitizers, go for tests and follow other measures as advised by our health personnel,” said Mutharika.

The one term president reminded Malawians that every person’s efforts are a key to the fight against coronavirus in the country.
