There is hot debate rolling on multiple social networking sites following a release of a list of Malawian men and women who have been labelled promiscuous.

The list which is controversial in nature has been circulating on Facebook pages include Hot Tips for Successful Relationships and Malawian Jokes among others to delight and dismay of many people.

The list which is believed to have originated from WhatsApp, a cross-platform smartphone messenger, has been circulated to thousands of internet subscribers and contains names of some prominent and celebrities in the country.

Meanwhile, there is hot debate going on some Facebook pages, as some people are condemning the list while other are of the view that it deserved to be publicised.

The list condemns the named people which include former Malawi beauty queen, a former Malawi News Model of the Year, a female dancehall artist; also has names of some sportsmen, bankers, lawyers and politicians among others.

It also contains names of young girls and boys who are believed to have been involved in prostitution across the country.

The list, which made headlines in one of the local newspaper, The Weekend Times also mentions some Malawi College of Accountancy students.

It is yet to be established how the country would take the issue as the list which the Face of Malawi has copies continue to circulate.

Meanwhile, one of the lawyers who is mentioned as one of the ‘love –rats’ , told the media that people who are all too prepared to write malicious comments about others, thinking that they are exempt from the laws against defamation, should know “they aren’t.”

The lawyer said defamation laws apply “whether in a newspaper, over the phone, in a tweet, in a blog, or on Facebook.”

“Just because it is written on Facebook does not make it protected from defamation laws,” he said.
