After the government’s decision to bar motor cyclist taxis from using unregistered motorcycles ensued demonstrations by the cyclists last week, the government resolved to give motorcycle taxi operators two months to register their motorcycles and get licences.

Speaking to The Nation newspaper, Malawi Police head of traffic McPherson Matowe revealed that the police held a meeting with the kabaza operators, to which they agreed to register and insure their motorcycles by 16 October 2020.

Prior to the 2 month window, the Minister of Homeland Security Richard Chimwendo Banda was quoted telling Zodiak Broadcasting Station that during an earlier discussion, the government gave the operators a three-month grace period to register their machines and get their licences.
