In a macabre crime, a 50-year-old widow was allegedly raped by her 39-year-old son-in-law at her residence in Panruti village of Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district on Sunday. Later, the accused attempted to kill himself after the survivor lodged a complaint against him.
According to the police, the accused is a resident of the same village as the survivor. On Sunday, he came to her house and raped her. She was taken to Cuddalore Government General Hospital (CGGH) for medical care as she had suffered internal injuries. The hospital authorities informed the police about the case.
Subsequently, a team of officials from the all-women police station in Panruti met the 50-year-old survivor and conducted preliminary inquiries. Based on the information shared by the survivor, they registered a case of rape under IPC Section 376 against the accused.
Meanwhile, the woman’s son-in-law came to know that a case has been registered against him. Fearing police action, he tried to kill himself near his house. However, the timely intervention of his neighbours prevented him from taking the extreme step. Later, he was taken to CGGH for treatment.
In another incident, four men allegedly raped and brutally thrashed a 25-year-old woman in Haryana’s Gurugram near Delhi, causing her severe head injuries, in the wee hours of Sunday.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), DLF, Karan Goyal said that on Saturday night one of the four accused met the woman near Sikanderpur metro station in Gurgaon and took her to a realtor’s office, where the crime took place.
They allegedly thrashed her when she resisted their attempts, he said, adding that “she suffered a deep cut on her head and was hospitalised in Gurugram.” All the four accused have been arrested, the ACP said.
