Malawi international Simplex Nthala, who plays for Vilankulo FC, has been named Mozambique national league(Mocambola) best goalkeeper for the 2011/2012 season.

The former Mighty Wanderers goalkeeper was awarded for his outstanding performance in the just ended season.

This is despite the player having suffered a setback in his revived career after dislocating his shoulder in July that left him sidelined for two weeks.

He, however, bounced back and had a wonderful season helping his club to finish on position five with 40 points in a 14-member league.

The Flames first choice goalkeeper said he was excited that he had managed to win the award.

“I think this is a big achievement. Winning the best goalkeeper accolade

in a foreign land means a lot to me,” he said.

“There are many goalkeepers here and having managed to beat all of them to win this award is no mean achievement for me. It could be the biggest achievement for me so far.”

Nthala joined Vilankulo last year after spending a year at Liga Malcumana which signed him from Mighty Wanderers.

Football Association of Malawi(Fam) general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda has since commended Nthala for his impressive performance.

“This is good news. At a time when most of our national team players are struggling out there, it’s a relief to hear that players like Simplex are doing well,” he said.

“Simplex is one of the best goalkeepers that the country has ever produced. We wish him all the best and hope he will continue prospering in his professional career.”
