Some Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) district governors from the Northern Region have elected Smart Mwakayira to be acting regional governor.

Mwakayira has been elected on the position to replace Christopher Mzomera Ngwira who is serving a four year jail term.

The district governors are currently meeting in Mzuzu, and 14 out of 22 are attending the meeting.

The governors yesterday protested the party’s decision that its president, Peter Mutharika, should appoint the regional governor for them, arguing that would be breaking the party’s constitutional.

Meanwhile, Mutharika is yet to address the media from his private home in Mangochi in order to give clarity on the cracks that have emerged in the then ruling party.
