Government has ordered the reinstatement of Boxing Day as a public holiday effective this year.

A statement signed by local government spokesperson Maganizo Mazeze, indicates that the holiday has been restored because most Christians still observe as an important day.

“Government has observed that many Malawians Christians continue to treat boxing day as a special day in their religious calendar and that it is also celebrated as a public holiday in many countries and societies the world-over,” reads part of the statement.

Boxing Day, which falls on December 26, was removed by the Mutharika regime on the basis that the country had too many public holidays which were counter productive
