International Relations Expert Maclan Kanyang’wa has said President Lazarus Chakwera owes Malawians an explanation over his decision to open an Embassy in Jerusalem, Israel.
According to Kanyang’wa he said he believes that the decision was made in a hasty adding that Malawians need to be told reasons behind the decision.
He therefore challenged the president to come out clear and outline benefits and consequences that Malawi may get from having a diplomatic relations with Jerusalem.
Malawi has been making headlines after President Chakwera announced that Malawi will open an embassy in Jerusalem soon after he attained the presidency in June this year.
He has however not come out clear on what prompted him to make the decision and despite calls from other stakeholders advising Malawi to reverse its decision on Jerusalem Chakwera has said nothing.
Palestinian president’s special envoy Hanan Jarrar last week said that Malawi has defied international laws and United Nations Resolutions on Jerusalem, and that may have consequences.
Malawi has become the only African country to have diplomatic mission in Jerusalem, joining US and Guatemala.
