President Lazarus Chakwera has expressed concern over growing cases of financial abuse in City and District Councils.
This follows failure by some councils to account for funds used in various activities at council levels and provide financial reports.
Speaking after an interface with representatives of Mzuzu City Council, Chakwera said it is unfortunate that the country is failing to develop due to high levels of corruption at district and City Councils.
He has since challenged responsible authorities to make sure that the act is brought to an end with immediate effect.
On his part, Councilor Brian Nyasulu Mayor for Mzuzu City has pleaded with the president to consider facilitating a financial bailout of the 1.8 billion kwacha that the city currently owes service providers.
In a related development, Lusizi Nkhalne, Ntchisi district Commissioner has apologized to the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament over his council’s failure to account for 30 Million Kwacha donor funds.
In its 2016 Audit Report, the office of the Auditor General established that the council could not account for 30 million kwacha of the 68 Million kwacha it received from donors in that financial year.
