The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has declared Leonard Mwalwanda of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) as winner of the Tuesday’s by-elections in Karonga Central Constituency.

MEC Chairperson Justice Chifundo Kachale made the announcement today in the capital Lilongwe.

Mwalwanda outclassed Frank Tumpale Mwenefumbo of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) with 6663 votes against 6021 votes.

In a related development, MEC has also declared MCP candidate Mphatso Boti as winner of the Lilongwe North West Constituency and Isaac Odges as Makhuwira South Ward winner in Chikwawa.

Speaking after declaring the winners, Kachale described the November 10 by-elections as free, fair and credible for meeting legal requirements and International instruments.
