Barely a day after Civic Education and National Unity Minister Timothy Mtambo spelt doom for rapists, a 32 year old man has been arrested for repeatedly defiling his 14 year old daughter in Ulongwe Balaka.
The case came to light through Gender Protection Coordinator for Foundation for Civic Education and Social Empowerment-FOCESE, Esther Hawa.
She said: ” Our organisation facilitated the arrest of the man having learnt that he impregnated her 14 year old daughter.”
Deputy Director for Community Policing in the Malawi Police Service Alex Simenti expressed worry over rising cases of rape and defilement in the country.
“Statistics show that 1,281 rape and defilement cases have been recorded during this quarter, an increase from 1081 during the same period last year,” said Simenti.
Gender, Children and Community Development Minister Patricia Kaliati told local media recently that her ministry will move swiftly in collaboration with Parliament to tighten laws in a bid to stop the recent spate of rape and defilement cases across the country.
