President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has said his acceptance to be installed as the Chancellor of the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) is not a contradiction to his campaign promise of letting academic administrators run public universities.

“To some, my acceptance to be chancellor of LUANAR may seem a contradiction,” the President said.

He said despite his remarks in the past, his expectation was that there is need to repeal the current act “to rectify this anomaly”.

The Malawi leader said he was only complying with the LUANAR act of 2011 to be installed Chancellor.

“Am honoured to be installed as Chancellor,” he added.

Chakwera was apparently responding to critics who have argued- in both social and conventional media -that by accepting the chancellorship, he was contradicting his campaign pledge of relinquishing such ceremonial powers.

On Thursday, LUANAR, which is one of the country’s four public universities, conferred the honour of the President at its graduation ceremony that took place at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
