Government says the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Extraordinary Troika Summit of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation is crucial in the promotion of peace and stability of the region.
President of Botswana, Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, will be hosting the extraordinary summit at Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel and Convention Centre in the capital Gaborone and Malawi’s President Dr Lazarus Chakwera will be in attendance.
Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lucky Sikwese told journalists in Gaborone ahead of the summit that Malawi as SADC member ought to participate in all efforts that yield peace and stability in the region and at global level.
The meeting has been necessitated by rising armed conflicts and guerilla attacks in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Mozambique.
Meanwhile, a meeting of top Government officials, and the Ministerial Committee of the Organ, has started this morning in preparation for the summit Friday November 27,2020.
Malawi, South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania are troop contributing countries under the Force Intervention Brigade of the United Nations Organisation in DRC and Mozambique.
The SADC Troika of the Organ includes, Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe as the current, incoming and outgoing Chair of the Organ respectively.
Sikwese said, ” the DRC and Mozambique have been under security threats of insurgents, and it is crucial for these leaders to meet and discuss how best to deal with the matter collectively.”
The SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation seeks to promote peace and security in the region in line with Article 2 of the SADC Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
