Two men have drowned in a well at Chazima village in the area of Traditional Authority Ndindi in Salima district on November 28, 2020.

They have been identified as Stanley Mtawayi 79, from Chazima village and Moses Kamphonde 53, from Mikuju village, T/A Ndindi in the district.

The first deceased mate his fate as he tried to draw water from the well which is over ten metres deep and almost 150 metres away from home. It took him time without turning back and this prompted his grandchild to make a follow up and found only shirt and pail outside the well.

He then informed other villagers to check for his grandparent and they suspected that he had fallen into the deep well.

Moses Kaponde (the second deceased) challenged his friends to go into the well and check if Mtawayi had fallen into it. Unfortunately, him too did not manage to come out.

The incidents forced the villagers to report the matter to police who later visited the scene.

Efforts were made to retrieve the dead bodies. They were retrieved successfully at 1900hrs and 2100hrs respectively.

Both bodies were taken to Salima district hospital for postmortem where it has been revealed that death was due to suffocation.
