Democratic progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the South Kondwani Nankhumwa is today meeting members of Poor and Concerned Persons with Albinism (PACPWA) at his private Luchenza Residence.
PACPWA is break-away faction of the Association of Persons with Albinism (APAM) which is being headed by Ian Simbota.
The meeting coincides with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which falls on 3 December and the main events is currently underway in Mzuzu where Minister Gender Patricia Kaliati is in attendance.
Nankhumwa donated fertilizer and maize seed to members of PACPWA.
Speaking after hosting member of PACPWA Nankhumwa said: “Much as the physical security of the people with albinism is important but we must also cultivate other ways of empowering people with albinism with food security also as a top priority as most of them are discriminated in our society.”
Albinism is a non- contagious and genetically inherited situation. It most commonly results on the lack of melanin pigment in the hair, skin and eyes, causing vulnerability to sun exposure which can lead to skin cancer and visual impairment.
