Government has trashed rumors that President Lazarus Chakwera is planning to send troops to neighboring Mozambique to help fighting the Islamists insurgents as reported by some Social media publications.

Last week some Social Media publications published an article that president Chakwera is intending to send Malawian Troops to Mozambique alleging that it was part of Southern African Development (SADC) Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit Plus Force Invention Brigade – Troop Contributing Countries, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique on November 27, 2020 in the Republic of Botswana.

In a press statement seen by Face of Malawi reporter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the article is “false and creates expectations contrary to the spirit of the Summit,”

“In addition, the article is insensitive to the security and diplomatic implications that can arise due to the careless and malicious publication,” read the statement.

The statement further stressed that as per the Communique which was published by the SADC Organ Troika Secretariat, the summit did not discuss sending troops to the Republic of Mozambique.

The Ministry has therefore asked the general public not to be carried away with such stories.
