Malawi First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera, Tuesday treated over 50 elderly men and women to a luncheon at Chikoko Bay State Lodge with calls to the public to respect the elderly.

The First Lady said she was glad to host her “fellow” the elderly at the state residences in Mangochi at festive season.

“I feel very delighted to join you my fellow elderly people in this luncheon – As a grandmother, myself, I really feel at home to be in your midst,” said Madam Chakwera.

In an interview with journalists, later, the First Lady described the elderly people as “precious and pillars of wisdom” and that they should be celebrated and not be accused of all sorts of evil doing.

“You don’t just accuse someone of witchcraft just because they are old, no; we need to appreciate the presence of the elderly and it is very good to sit down with them, hear stories and tap the wisdom from their stories,” she said.

The First Lady also distributed humpers to the elderly before they dispersed to their respective homes.
