Authorities from Malawi Prison Service have confirmed that the situation is calm at Malawi Prison Training School where over 500 Malawians are being quarantined waiting for their clearance from Covid-19.

National Prison Spokesperson Chimwemwe Shaba confirmed of the development adding that arrests have been made.

The incident involved 518 returnees quarantined at Mapanga Prison Training College since Friday for Covid-19 testing before being released to their respective homes.

Commotion ensued at the facility after the returnees went on rampage demanding their passports back and instant release to their homes.

The uncompromising group burnt a guard room, beds and mattresses at the facility as well as smashing several vehicles on the Limbe-Zomba road.

While confirming the arrests, the police have also not been forthcoming on the exact figure.
