A man in South Africa named, Lungile Nxelelwa will likely never see the outside of prison again, after he was handed two life sentences for the gruesome murder and rape of his girlfriend.

Nxelelwa is said to have murdered his girlfriend, Keneilwe Pule (27) in a gruesome way as he cut up her body in pieces, using a grinder, before eventually setting it on fire.

Sentencing proceedings got underway in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, February 9, 2021. Nxelelwa also received five years for attempted murder, which will run concurrently with the life sentences.

According to reports, Nxelelwa was found by an angry mob of community members who then attacked him.

The court found that Nxelelwa showed no remorse whatsoever for his actions and felt that he had claim over her, as if she was a possession.

“In argument and as a result of a pathologist’s testimony, which highlighted the grievousness of injuries to genitalia and anus, counsel for the defence was forced to concede that some constituted the institution of grievous bodily harm,” the presiding judge said in his ruling.

“Accused must know that a woman/ girlfriend with whom you have co-habitated for 3 years is not a possession, nor somebody over whom you have power of life and death…”

After delivering the sentence, the judge advised Nxelelwa that he could better utilise his time in prison by furthering his education, for which the state will foot the bill.

The Gauteng Social Development has been attending court proceedings in relation to the case, and was also at the sentencing as a show of support to Pule’s family.

“We are satisfied with the verdict, what the judge did was to send a really strong message to society that if you commit such a horrendous act to a woman the justice system will catch with you and you will be sentenced to life,” said the department’s acting head Sipho Thanjekwayo.
