In Jamaica, a gran has celebrated her 91st birthday by getting married to her long-term boyfriend after years of rejecting him as he was proposing while drunk.
Evelina Meadder-Wilson finally tied the knot with 73-year-old Calgent Wilson following a courtship that has lasted more than a decade.
The happy couple got married on January 22 in their home town of St Thomas in Jamaica, much to the delight of their family and friends.
Evelina told CNJ Jamaica the pair became an item when she fell ill and Calgent, who works as a farmer, nursed her back to health.
She said since then he would talk about them getting married but it was when he had been drinking so she would laugh it off.
She said: “He would talk about it (getting married) all the while especially when he had a drink.
“But I wouldn’t listen to him because he had been drinking.”
However she eventually accepted his proposals after her family persuaded her to make him a happy man.
The mum-of-four said: “He’s my husband and my company.
“When you get to our age you need to have a companion.”
Evelina said her new husband chose her birthday as their wedding day.
Evelina’s granddaughter did her hair and make-up on her wedding day with the beaming bride saying she is happy they have sealed their ‘harmonious relationship’.
“We don’t fuss and we have never even had a disagreement,” Evelina said.
