The youth parliament has reported that it will be returning for sitting this year after two years without meetings and deliberations.

Parliament spokesperson Ian Mwenye has on Tuesday confirmed the development saying the preparations will commence next month.

According to Mwenye, the preparations will involve the selection of youth parliamentarians and setting dates for the sitting.

“We are meeting to strategize on how we are going to do the selections for the youth parliamentarians and to come up with the calendar for the program,” said Mwenje.

Meanwhile, Youth Activist Peter Mumba has stressed the need for merit and avoids politics in the selection of young parliamentarians to lead the process.

“Previous years young parliamentarians were not presenting the views of the people as there were not attached to the young people on the ground,” he said.

However, the country held the last youth parliamentary session in April 2018 as the preparations for the meeting last year were halted to pave way for the fresh presidential elections.

Youth Parliament is one of the outreach activities of the Parliament of Malawi aimed at giving the youth platform to voice their concerns on critical issues affecting their lives for government and concerned stakeholders to address them.

Members of the program are selected from all 193 constituencies in the country.
