Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has suspended its activities in line with legal advice from the Attorney General Chikosa Sulungwe.

The development comes barely two days after the firing of two MEC Commissioners Linda Kunje and Jean Mathanga.

A letter from the Commission says as it stands, the remaining team of commissioners has no legal mandate to continue discharging duties until the issue of Section 75 subsection 1 of the Constitution is addressed.

Earlier in the day, the social media was awash with a MEMO from Sulungwe to MEC Chairperson Dr. Chifundo Kachale ordering the Commission to stop discharging its duties, saying the remaining cohorts is not legally mandated to do so.

Sulungwe cited Section 75 subsection 1 of the Constitution, saying this section should first be addressed.
