Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima has this morning inspected the site where the Greenbelt Authority (GBA) is set to construct a rice irrigation scheme worth over K30 billion at Nthora Illora Ngosi in Karonga District.
Speaking after the inspection, Dr Chilima said the slow progress in the construction of the scheme is delaying farmers to start benefiting from the scheme.
In his remarks, CEO for GBA, Eric Chidzungu said the slow progress has been attributed to delay in availability of resources to kick start the project but was quick to point out that Government has now provided over K1 billion with more funds in the pipeline.
The Government is currently looking for an investor to construct the irrigation scheme under the Greenbelt Authority of which 60 percent will be owned by smallholder farmers.
