About Afican Movie Academy Awards
The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) is an offshoot of Africa Film
Academy. The Academy founded on the best film tradition, is geared towards research, training and propagating film making in Africa.
Established in 2005, AMAA aims to facilitate the development and relevance of African Film & Cinema by providing a rewards & recognition platform for filmmakers on the continent. African filmmakers work hard with very little and have, not through serendipity but through sheer audacity, managed to build the 2nd largest film industry in the world. Today, African films serve as a link for Africans in the Diaspora with Africans at home. These films have the potential to serve as a shared collective experience, a reminder that Africa is a vibrant continent filled with colour, energy and possibility.
AMAA is conceptualized as an annual celebration of the brightest and the best in African movies. The first award of its kind, it is the biggest gathering of moviemakers across the African continent. AMAA has evolved from a one-day live televised event to an all-year-round engagement platform for filmmakers, industry professionals and their fans.
Today, AMAA is the most prestigious and glamorous entertainment industry event of its kind in Africa. The highlight of the AMAAs is the televised Awards in April that reaches 50 million viewers spread across Africa and the rest of the world. Corporate sector participation is important to ensure continuity and maintain the standard of excellence AMAA is generally known for. This year’s AMA-Awards is scheduled to hold on the 20th of April 2013. The details of venue will be officially announced in a Press
Conference.
AMAA Nomination Night is an exotic night of music, dance, glitz and
glamour where nominees for its keenly contested 24 award categories are announced. Malawi has been choose to host the 9th edition of our
Nominations, scheduled to hold on the 15th & 16th of March in Lilongwe, especially because of the President’s passion to give back to the people of Malawi. Also to grow the Malawi Film Industry thereby driving direct foreign investment. Past events have been held in Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, and Burkina Faso; graced by international film stars like Danny Glover, Vivica Fox, Angela Basset, Mo’Nique, Cuba Goodings Jnr, and the Late Mariam Makeba.
Africa Film Academy will be training interested youth in film making via one of our offerings – Film in a Box. It is a well structured,
participatory and exhaustive training program that teaches aspiring and emerging film makers critical aspects of film making, equipping them with the requisite skills required for film production. It was established as a non-profit entity with the dual mission to use film as a tool for economic social empowerment and to drive corporate participation in social development through sponsorship and collaboration.
