Police in Lilongwe have arrested 15 people for allegedly possessing and cultivating Indian hemp and operating liquor businesses without licenses.

The suspects were arrested in the afternoon of Friday May 21 2021 in Chigwirizano and Unit Six locations.

The exercise was coordinated by Lilongwe Police Station, community policing service team and members of Chigwirizano Community Policing Forum.

The arrests follow a string of complaints from some community members that the suspects sell the illicit stuff to school-going youths.

During the exercise, the team uprooted cannabis sativa, confiscated the same from stalls and seized unlicensed liquor from shebeens.

The 15 suspects will appear in court soon to answer various charges which range from cultivating and possessing Indian hemp to operating businesses without documents.

Meanwhile, Police will continue with the exercise to bring sanity in the communities.
