The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has called for the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) board’s disbanding over wasteful spending of public funds.

This follows reports that the MACRA board spent K46 million in allowances for a 2-week governance training in Dubai.

However, this revelation has caused uproar amongst various stakeholders who expected the Tonse led Administration to exercise financial cautiousness.

The development also comes as Malawians mostly on social media are pushing the Authority to order telecommunication companies to reduce data tariffs in the campaign duped #DataMustFall.

Speaking to the Media, HRDC National Coordinator Luke Tembo described the board’s conduct as a total departure from cleaning the rubble agenda.

Tembo argues that they have demonstrated gross negligence and incompetence when Malawi’s economy is bleeding.
