The Country’s Former President and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika will today 30th June 2021 have a press briefing from 2 pm at his retirement home in Mangochi.
According to inside sources, Mutharika is expected to congratulate DPP’s candidate Symon Vuwa Kaunda who has reclaimed his parliamentary seat in Nkhatabay Central according to the unofficial results.
Report from the unofficial results from 29 polling stations indicates that Kaunda has obtained 5, 439 votes against People’s Party (PP) candidate Ralph Mhone who has gotten his share of 5, 223 votes.
Kaunda who won the 2019 parliamentary elections, was stripped of his position after People’s Party candidate Ralph Mhone filed a complaint on the outcome of the polls.
Mhone challenged the results in court while claiming that, the elections were not free and fair hence accusing Kaunda of rigging.
However, the Blantyre high court nullified the parliamentary seat of Kaunda following the evidence the defense team presented before the court.
The court then ordered fresh polls in the constituency.
Later, Kaunda filed a complaint to African Court following the nullification of his election, which also rebuffed him.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is expected to announce the official results very soon.
