The Lilongwe Chief Resident Magistrate court is this morning set to rule on whether or not evidence brought by the state’s 8th witness should be used in the case involving former CEO for Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority Collins Magalasi and 3 others.
Magalasi is in court for money laundering and fraud charges along with former MERA Public Relations Officer Patrick Maulidi, former MERA Procurement Officer Bright Mbewe, and business lady Dorothy Shonga Nkhoma.
The four are accused of being involved in a misprocurement fraud amounting to K107 million.
A witness that was called by the state to give evidence on Wednesday, July 14, MERA’s Internal Auditor Alexander Ganiza, brought in court an audit report of Mera procurement between July 2019 and June 2020 which revealed that the amount which was used to buy MERA cloth was too high than what was budgeted for.
However, the legal counsel representing Magalasi and the 3 co-accused rendered the report irrelevant in the present matter.
The defense has asked the court to allow the removal of some pages of the document saying they touch on a separate matter before the same court.
