Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has disclosed that about 300 vehicles the authority impounded have been put up for auction starting from Tuesday as the owners have failed to pay tax.
MRA Public Relations Officer Steven Kapoloma has confirmed the development saying that they have decided to sell the said cars because the owners have failed to pay tax.
According to Kapoloma, the vehicles are those which were impounded due to unpaid duty tax and those that were bought through unjustifiable processes.
“It is our decision to bring them on the market as the owners have failed to bail them out since we gave them a period of time to come and collect soon after paying the charges we demanded,” Highlighted Kapoloma.
Commenting on the issue some economic experts have warned that if people will continue to avoid paying tax the economy will continue to face challenges.
Meanwhile, seven vehicles belonging to the former director of State residences Peter Mukhito’s have also been listed for auction as he has failed to pay MRA the sum of K50 million.
The seven detained vehicles are a Toyota Land Cruiser (VX8) registration number BW 6060, a Range Rover with no number plate, Toyota Land Cruiser (VX8) with no number plate, a Mercedes Benz registration number CPM 2, a VW Passat registration number CP 7074, a Toyota Fortuner registration number MH 950 and a Bentley registration number FW16LS-GP.
