The Ministry of Homeland Security, immigration department, Law practitioners and other stakeholders conducted a national consultative conference which is part of the process of reviewing of the Immigration Act.
The conference happened on Thursday at sunbird Capital hotel in Lilongwe which among others, focused on the importance of reviewing laws of Malawi which are outdated as they were enacted in 1964 on 1st January.
Speaking during the launch, the Minister of Homeland security, Richard Chimwendo Banda said it is important to review the laws of Malawi because it is paramount in improving the socio-economic status of the country.
“Foreign investors to come into the country and work with the government there is need of flexible immigration laws and policies that allow immigrants to settle and work together with the country as this helps to boost the economic status of the country, “said Banda.
The Malawi citizenship Act, the investment and export promotion Act, Business Licensing Act and Tourism and Hotels Act, are among other acts that will be reviewed.
Meanwhile the law commissioner of special law commission, Rosemary Kumitsonyo Kanyuka has commended the government of malawi for providing financial assistance and supporting the program.
