President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday surprised many Malawians when he issued a directive to non-existing ministry headed by a person who died last year.

Writing on his official Facebook page Chakwera said he has directed the Minister for Disability & Elderly Affairs Rachel Kachaje to conduct public assessment of every public institution’s performance in upholding the rights and diginity of persons with disability.

But this publication has established that Kachaje who once served on the post under the reign of former President Dr. Joyce Banda, died last year.

As this is not enough, the said ministry no longer exist.

Former President Peter Mutharika changed the ministry and is now called Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare and is being headed by Patricia Kaliati.

“I have directed the Deputy Minister for Local Government; Hon. Halima Daud, M.P., to ensure that our building accessibility standards are complied with in all the councils and I expect a progress report no later than the last day of this fiscal year.

“In the same vein, Minister for Disability & Elderly Affairs Rachel Kachaje i, is directed to conduct an assessment of every public institution’s performance in upholding the rights and dignity of persons with disability and to report those who are in violation of the same to me,” wrote Chakwera.

He added: “I will know how to deal with the heads of those departments!”

Meanwhile, Chakwera has removed the post.
