Chiradzulu District Association of Persons with Albinism (APAM) President, Benard Makhanga, has asked communities from Traditional Authority (T/A) Nkalo and Sub-Traditiobal Authority Sandrak to respect the rights of persons with albinism.
In an interview on Monday at Sub T.A. Sandraks headquarters, Makhanga reminded people in the district to completely change their mindset on issues to do with albinism.
“Most people in the district know that persons with albinism have to equally enjoy their rights like any other person despite our skin colour, but only few people have a different perception about us.This message is going to those that still think negatively about us,” he said.
Area Development Committee (ADC) Chairperson for Sub-Traditiobal Authority Sandrak, Patrick Chabwera, said the community has been engaged several times by different stakeholders to inform them on the need for respecting the rights of persons with albinism; how to protect and engage them on different development activities in the area.
Among other stakeholders, Chiradzulu District Council engaged with teachers, Primary Education Advisors (PEAs) and School Based Committees on how they can protect and defend the rights of persons with albinism in school.
The local council also conducted awareness campaign with support from Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre under Cultivating Environment for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Persons with Albinism in Malawi Project.
