Moderate Tropical Storm “ANA” which the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) warned of earlier has hit hard some parts of the Southern Region leaving one person dead and scores of others injured.
In the statement, Kalemba said in Mulanje District one person has died and 30 others have sustained various degrees of injuries and that nine traditional authorities (T/As) have been affected leaving most households displaced and seeking refuge in churches and schools following the cyclone ANA induced heavy rains.
The statement further stated that the M1 Road in Chikwawa has been cut off at Thabwa and the Chapananga Bridge on the Chikwawa-Mwanza Road has had its approaches cut off.
“Furthermore, in Nsanje, Mankhanga and Nyachikhadza areas have been cut-off with some households feared trapped by the floods,” the statement further said.
Meanwhile, DoDMA has assured the public that it has relief items readily available in all the strategic places for provision of assistance to people affected by disasters or those rendered destitute.
“In collaboration with councils and various humanitarian organisations, we’re setting camps to accommodate the displaced households and we’re establishing an emergency operation centre in Blantyre to coordinate and ease response operations in the wake of the ANA which is expected to affect most parts of the Southern Region,” the statement added.
