Police in Blantyre have arrested six suspected notorious thieves who have been terrorising the commercial city, stealing K5 million worth property.

Blantyre Police spokesperson Peter Mchiza said during a press briefing on Saturday that the law enforcers arrested the suspects between January and February this year.

“When members of the public come to us to report about theft incidents, they do so because they trust us that we are going to help recover their property. We, therefore, work hard day and night to investigate and arrest the suspects.

“We call upon the residents to work hand in hand with the police in order to reduce crime in the city,” he said.

During the briefing, police showed reporters recovered items such as TV sets, computer monitors, motorcycles and shoes.

Commenting on theft trends in the city, Mchiza said there has been a decline in cases owing to the police’s vigilance and their cooperation with the public.

He said: “When we compare the number of theft incidents that we have registered this year compared to the same period in the past, we have noted a reduction in crime rate.

“For instance, crime rate in Blantyre declined by two percent in 2021 compared to 2020.”

Blantyre City has recently been hit by a spate of robberies.
