Mozambican Government has donated food and non-food relief items to Tropical Storm Ana survivors in Malawi through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA).
President of the Institute for Disaster Management in Mozambique, Luisa Celma Meque presented the donation to DoDMA on behalf of the Mozambican Government at Bangula Evacuation Camp in Nsanje district on Thursday.
In an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana), Megue said the Mozambican Government appreciates the effort that the Malawi Government has made for taking care both of Malawians and Mozambicans that were affected by the storm.
“It is for this reason that the Mozambican Government has brought food and non-food items to complement what Malawi Government has been doing from the day that Tropical Storm displaced people in the two countries,” she said.
Megue advised people to continue enjoying the good relationship in camps despite their differences in nationality.
“When I look at you, I find it hard to differentiate who is a Malawian and who is a Mozambican,” she said. “I am glad that Malawians have received warmly the people from Mozambique and they are doing everything together in all the camps that I have visited.”
Commissioner for DoDMA, Charles Kalemba said Malawi Government appreciates the cordial bilateral relationship that exists between Malawi and Mozambique.
“We really appreciate for the good gesture that the Mozambican Government has shown for providing relief items to both Malawians and Mozambicans who are in the camps.
“This is just a continuation of what the Malawi Government and other stakeholders have been doing in providing relief items to all people at the camp regardless of their nationality,” he said, adding that DoDMA would continue providing food to Tropical Storm Ana survivors.
Some of the items supplied by the Mozambican Government included 500 bags of rice, cooking oil, maize flour, tents, soap and tin fish.
The Mozambican delegation visited Nyamithuthu, Nnembe and Bangula camps which have both Malawians and Mozambicans Tropical Storm Ana survivors.
Nsanje District has 10, 799 households in camps of which 2, 491 households are from Mozambique.
