Journalist Simon Mwewa of Simon Mwewa Television has stressed that it would be wrong to call Zambia’s ex-president Edgar Chagwa Lungu ‘Father of the nation’ following the passing of Zambia’s fourth republican president Rupiah Banda.

Just days after Zambia’s fourth republican president Rupiah Banda passed, Zambians started addressing Lungu as the father of the nation since he is the only former president left.

However, Mwewa thinks it is not right to call Lungu the father of the nation arguing that during his tenure he promoted tribalism.

According to Mwewa had it been that Lungu won last year’s general elections, the incumbent leader Hakainde Hichilema would have been subjected to all kinds of torture including imprisonment.

Mwewa Writes…

SHOULD PRESIDENT LUNGU BE REGARDED AS THE FATHER OF THE NATION?

The short answer is “NO”…Let me explain.

During the run up to the General-Elections, President Lungu’s surrogates [Ba Kambwil, Ba Davis Mwila and Innocent Kalimanshi ] were all preaching a brand of tribal politics that threatened to divide this country.

After such a tribal campaign message, assuming President Lungu won…how would he have held the country together? How can a President allow the message of tribalism to be preached and then attempt to preach ONENESS after winning?

Had the PF won in 2021, HH would be in prison by now on trumped up charges and Tongas would have been victimised for merely being TONGA.

So in conclusion…President Lungu should NOT be referred to as THE FATHER OF THE NATION….but rather “THE FORMER HEAD OF STATE.
