Police in Mangochi are hunting for a woman identified as Khadja Shaibu who is suspected to have dumped her new-born baby in a pit latrine.
It is said that Shaibu gave birth on March 14 and allegedly dumped the child a few hours after delivery.
Police Public Relations Officer, Amina Daudi has confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.
According to Daudi, the issue came to light when neighbours heard the baby crying inside the pit.
After receiving a report regarding the incident, police managed to rescue the baby with the help of community members.
The little one is now being taken care of at Alleluya Orphanage Centre in Namwera.
